My shitty ex gallbladder and letting go of the past

Over the 6 years or so I’d spend some time in counseling and my counselor would say “You need to cut the cord.” And I would retort “The cord is cut! ” Most of the time believing that I had actually done this. Time heals all wounds. So as time goes on you really believe you’ve done this but all that garbage has to go somewhere. I believe that somewhere is the gall bladder. Its like the junk yard for negative thoughts. A place where they can hide  and then release in the bile that our miraculous body produces.

I just spent the last week on the “road to recovery.” I think  i’m pretty good at this. After all, I spend my days telling patient how to do this. Go slow.  Eat, Drink, Pee, Poop, move and sleep. This is key. But until now it never dawned on me that maybe I should also be talking to them about putting the past in the past, dealing with their frustration and anger.

The gallbladder is a little sac that stores bile from the liver, and it’s found just beneath your liver. The gallbladder releases bile, via the cystic duct, into the small intestine to help break down the foods you eat — particularly fatty foods.
Typically the gallbladder doesn’t cause too many problems or much concern, but if something slows or blocks the flow of bile from the gallbladder, a number of problems can result and lead to gallbladder disease.
My gallbladder looked like a garbage dump.

Gallbladder Meridian

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), specific organs have a two hour time period when the Qi (energy) is at its peak in that meridian. The gallbladder meridian is most active between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. The liver meridian is most active between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.  Consistently waking during these hours is an indication that the gallbladder or liver is out of balance. When the energy of a meridian is not flowing well due to a block such as unhealthy eating, toxic overload or stress, you’ll experience a sign or symptom from the meridian(s) involved.

Better Medicine add a pinch of holistic

The last few weeks for me have been the scariest of my life. After not feeling good for a few days I took myself to the urgent care center to be told to get my butt directly to the er. Which i did, after i went home and let my dog out to relieve himself I drove my self directly to the er where people asked me at least 50 times “Did I drive there.”

I knew something bad was wrong but apparently I had no idea how bad but after a lot of blood work,  X-rays , a ct scan and a ultrasound i was told my gallbladder was a mess and it had to come out.

So great. For the last 33 years i had managed to stay out of the hospital. I had managed to not have a primary care physician for the last four years. Just the thought of going to the doctor and getting berated and yelled at totally bummed me out.   I was very spoiled when I lived in Boca. I knew everyone especially the integrative docs and I knew they were willing to at least have a conversation with me. I had however, been seeing an acupuncture doc and trying to work on what i thought was my issues after getting a really bad case of shingles last feb. I wanted to heal myself from the inside out. And i was and I felt great, Until I didn’t.

Healthcare workers: Listen don’t judge

As a nurse,   I  get to interact with all kinds of patients. Many who make a full time job of going to the doctors. those who hate going to the doctors, those who go and don’t listen, those who go and follow all instructions to a t.
As a patient. I’m a bad patient. Not really really bad. I just have a lot of disagreements with what is the right path. And honestly I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to be talked to – i want to have a conversation.

My first  trip to the hospital in 33  years had to do with a nasty gallbladder. All kinds of health care practitioners marched into my room in the er and even my sister remarked “well you won’t be eating that food anymore.”

Understanding How to Derail All Aboard Florida Along the St Lucie River/Indian River Lagoon

good stuff and thanks for the explanation. i know that along the coast we are not the only ones that are having an issue with this-down in ft lauderdale on the new river, the track are very close to the hospital and also down in jupiter. I think that it would be a wonderful thing for the tracks to go west -its all rural out there and in fact very pretty and also a nice stop in indiantown would actually do so much for indiantown-i think that would be a good thing we could all support! it would be wonderful to do some good!

Yesterday morning, over 100 boats gathered at the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart, forming a flotilla in opposition to “All Aboard Florida’s” high speed train which would close the bridges over the St Lucie River for unacceptable periods of time. A large red sign on Angie and Jeff Swenson’s boat read NO TRAINS.

Just in case you are not familiar with the project,  I thought today I would describe the basics of how All Aboard Florida’s father company, Fortress Investment Group, is structured, as the best ways to garner change, is to understand “how it works.”

We here in Martin County have certainly learned this with our St Lucie River/Indian River…

Why learn to Meditate?

Why learn to Meditate?

If someone told me 5 years ago I would be meditating every day and teaching meditation to my patients-well- I would have laughed and said “Oh ya right!” Actually, five years ago I was so stressed out I probably would not have laughed. I would have walked away. Every day my clients and patients tell me they can’t meditate and I just throw it out there. “Would you like to learn?”

Mediation is the intention for attention. It is being in the here and now and not looking back and perseverating about the past. Its not about thinking about the future. Its about being right here right now.

Image
With a simple google search you can find hundreds of scientific articles about meditation. Even ten years ago if I had written this there would be a lot of laughter. But now we have science. I love science.
Even with science there are still skeptics.
Can you breath? Because if you can breath you can meditate.
Its like riding a bike. The more you practice the better you get.
Start here. This one of my favorites. Do this once a day. Keep a journal and see your progress.

Poultice‬s, apparently if you don’t use them they don’t work

‪Poultice‬s

A poultice, also called cataplasm, is a soft moist mass, often heated and medicated, that is spread on cloth over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed, or painful part of the body. It can be used on wounds such as cuts.

I love stuff like this – things you can make naturally using materials you have in your house. So why didn’t I do this when instructed by my acupuncture doc when I swore I would do anything  to get rid of those damm shingles. I felt truly stupid. If it was on my arm or leg i think I would have been more apt to do this but spreading mashed potatoes on my forehead and then trying to  sleep was a little over the top even for me. Having said that- I wish I did.
I even tried using my river warrior headband.

Image
According to my doc this mashed potato poultice would draw the virus out of me. Its not too late – The bad part of my shingles is GONE! I still have a few red marks so until they go away its not totally gone. I still have time.
I would however try to make this in other situations and if i didn’t have to wrap my head in gauze  and also recommend to my family and friends. Mostly because its easier to recommend than to actually do my self.

Food equals Medicine: Ginger

Food equals Medicine: Ginger

I’m a fan of ginger ale. Its the one thing settles my yucky stomach. Canada Dry is my brand. It has real ginger in it. Having said that -its extracted and lots of not so good stuff in ginger ale.
I don’t know why i have never included grated real ginger in my food. It’s delicious, not expensive, easy to deal with. Just grab and grate.
Ginger, aka Zingiber officinale, is a rhizome, a thick underground stem that sprouts roots and shoots.
Ginger as medicine
Ginger is one of the oldest medicinal foods.
Since the herb originated in Southeast Asia, it’s not surprising that ancient Chinese and Indian healers have made ginger a part of their toolkit for thousands of years.

shoh wu chi a tonic and Lili Von Shtupp

When ever I think of “tonics” I think of the wild west and the guys in their wagons touting the latest cure. One of the more popular tonics like Hostetter’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters had an alcohol content of 44.3% by volume. Others, like Parkers Tonic had 41.6% and Peruna had 28%.
From the 1850’s to the early 1900’s, cocaine- and opium-laced elixirs, tonics and wines were broadly used by people of all social classes. Yes folks , there was cocaine in coke.

Food equals medicine MUNG BEANS

Food equals medicine MUNG BEANS

The only beans i ever really liked were Boston Baked Beans.  Delicious but probably not good for you. With my hotdog and some potato salad.  On my old sailboat in eel pond in woods hole.

I digress…
This stuff you can get the bean or also in vermicelli noodles.
These guys are packed with lots of protein and very easy to cook. I like that it helps to lower cholesterol. As nurses we should be encouraging our patients to eat better.  A total plus that these little guys contain phytoestrogens which aid in the production of collagen and elastin which improve skin tone.

food equals medicine SEAWEED

food equals medicine  SEAWEED

This was another one of the foods i said ugh to.  Now i can’t enough of it.  I just bought some iodine. We don’t get enough Iodine.

Salt does not naturally contain iodine. “No salt, table or sea, in its natural state contains iodine.  This mineral was added to salt in the early 1900s when scientists discovered that an iodine deficiency in American diets was causing thyroid goiter, a mass in the neck that could press on the trachea and esophagus. This discovery led to “iodized” table salt and a significant reduction of goiters. Subsequently, lack of iodine in pregnant women was found to cause a form of mental retardation in infants called Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD).  This disorder remains a problem.  According to UNICEF (2007), “over 1 billion people in the world suffer from iodine deficiency, and 38 million babies born every year are not protected from brain damage due to IDD.”
