What causes hate? The Hate circuit.

So interesting

There is a lot of Hate out there but what causes it?

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-origin-of-hatred/

“If love is said to come from the heart, what about hate? Along with music, religion, irony and a host of other complex concepts, researchers are on the hunt for the neurological underpinnings of hatred. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has begun to reveal how the strong emotion starts to emerge in the brain.”

A neurobiologist named Semi Zeki of University College London’s Laboratory of Neurobiology led a study last year that scanned 17 adult brains as they gazed at the images of a person they claimed to hate. Across the board, areas in the medial frontal gyrus, right putamen, premotor cortex and medial insula activated. Parts of this so-called “hate circuit,”he researchers noted, are also involved in initiating aggressive behavior, but feelings of aggression itself—as well as anger, danger and fear—show different patterns in…

Sea Level Rise in Miami and Politics. Let’s just say no to the “deniers.”

no

The last election was the first election I participated in a long time. I felt very disenfranchised and I realized how important it was to get people out to vote. I put together a list of clean water candidates because I thought it would bring us together and it did. It did in a way. In a way it didn’t. We really really need to do this all together.

Now we need this more than ever. Miami is floating away.

What’s going to happen? What’s going to happen is what has happened. People are going to stick their necks in the sand and its going to get worse and our fellow citizens are in danger.  Please go talk to your party…

Hannibal and Cinematography: Looking is Hard

excellent post! I’m blown away by the cinematography

Tillary does Photo graphy.

Hannibal

My absolutely guiltless pleasure this past spring was Bryan Fuller’s NBC series Hannibal. Besides enjoying the quipping but heavy writing, fantastic performances, morbid crossing of death and food (Pushing Daisies much?), and themes of destructive imagination, this show is GORGEOUS. Design teams did an incredible job throughout, but I especially want to highlight the cinematography.

The image above is representational the show’s aesthetic in general: Tight Framing. Medium-close-ups. Deep, muted colors that tend heavily toward red and bluish-greens. Shadowy lighting. Shallow focus.

Let me repeat that last one: Shallow. Focus.

Will Graham 1.8

His neck is out of focus, but I can see every hair on his patch of scruff. Like, what? What?

And this is a constant throughout the show: Features of a face or object are sharp while features just inches away are not. Focus softens and sharpens in single shots. Backgrounds are entirely blurred. It’s beautiful, but also borders…

A Closer Look at DeSantis’ Executive Order 19-12: “Achieving More Now For Florida’s Environment”

Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch

On January 10th, Florida’s Office of the Governor, under very newly elected Ron DeSantis, issued Executive Order 19-12. The title of this order is “Achieving More Now For Florida’s Environment.” It is a remarkable and voluminous piece.

Today, I am going to share it in full as you may have only heard about parts of it in the newspaper.

*For entire Executive Order 19-12 link here; you may wish to print out for your files: https://www.flgov.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/EO-19-12-.pdf

Here we go–

First, note the “Whereases…” giving background and laying foundation for the order.

Whereas, water and natural resources are the foundation of Florida’s communities, economy and way of life; and

Whereas, protection of water resources is one of the most critical issues facing our state and requires immediate action; and

Whereas, recent algae blooms have resulted in an increasing threat to our environment and fragile ecosystems, including our rivers, beaches, and wildlife…

Our Fairy Godmother Mary Barley

Our Fairy Godmother Mary Barley

Mary Barley Mary Barley

For some great amazing reason there are many of us that walk around with our water issues in our head. All day long. In our dreams. It’s what we think about when we are driving the car and when we wake up in the morning. It’s what has brought us together. The overwhelming need to fix this.

Way before we were doing this Mary Barley was on the case.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_godmother

Fairy Godmothers are magically-gifted women who monitor magical forces across the kingdoms. Whenever events are right for a fairy tale to recur, the relevant Fairy Godmother steps in to make sure that the tale in question runs its course with as few fatalities as possible.

Mary Barley has been watching out for our clean water for a long time. She has fought the dragons. She has the vision of the Everglades, of clean…

Miss Amy’s Treasure Coast Style Smoked Fish Dip

Spotted Hound Kitchen

20180203_160327-1

Smoked Fish Dip is a staple in my Treasure Coast kitchen, a Floridian favorite appetizer or snack. I like it on Townhouse Pita Crackers with Sea Salt – my husband prefers Triscuits.

This is a spicy dip and the amounts of seasonings are a starting point, I usually add more and let the flavors blend for at least 8 hours in the fridge. I don’t eat salt, so it will probably need some for everyone else.

Treasure Coast Style Smoked Fish Dip

4 ounces smoked Mahi Mahi

2 1/2 Tablespoons mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (I use Badia)

dash garlic powder

dash celery seed

juice of 1/2 large lemon

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

2 heaping teaspoons chopped jalapenos (I use Mt Olive)

Using a food processor, add fish to the bowl and pulse until it breaks into even small pieces, add Old Bay, smoked…

Puerto Rico needs help. Federal Gov incapable.

lets make a list!

Treasure Coast Free Press

Puerto Rico needs help. Federal Gov incapable.

This morning Trump posted this:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website has removed key statistics on Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria from its website, according to The Washington Post.

On Wednesday, just 5 percent of Puerto Rico had electricity and only 50 percent had water.

Do we have to do everything? Apparently this White House is not capable.

I have suggestions. What are yours?

FEMA works on electricity and water
Call all the volunteers red cross, salvation army etc who have received donations to put their heads together and come up with a plan.

All states have mrcs with trained nurses. Call on states to help.

ACOE breaks 6000cfs per second, slaughtering the St Lucie River/Indian River Lagoon

OMg! we’re getting slaughtered

Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch

The following is a texting conversation between my brother, Todd, and me, just over an hour ago.  As you can see, Todd keeps me in real-time. Now, I wish to share with you.

Todd: Hi Jacqui, looks like it’s “balls to the wall” —like the old jet fighter saying.
Lake O is at 17 feet and rising…

Jacqui: Holy —! Didn’t Gary Goforth say the max for S-80 is 12,000 CFS? How much is this?

Todd: This is normal high-end. ~4000 cfs. In 2004-2005 it looks like they maxed at 5-6000cfs. I’ll graph against the lake stage.

Jacqui: How do u know it’s 4000? I see nothing posted 4 today on ACOE site.

Todd: My app and links on my website. http://w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/reports/DssWeb/rtcomps/basins/Okeechobee.htm

Jacqui: Thx that  ACOE Jacksonville Lake O site doesn’t show, will go to http://www.thurlowpa.com/news.htm

Todd: S-80 hit 6,727 cfs on 10/06/2004. The lake was at 17.86 and rising it…
