Memorial Day 2015: Remembering Uncle Edward Gelman

Memorial Weekend 2016

Cyndi Lenz's avatarcyndi lenz

My Dad, Arthur had two brothers Melvin and Edward and one sister, Millie. I never met my Uncle Edward because he was killed during WW2. But I knew him through stories my dad would tell me and I know that my Gramma Bertha and Grampa Max thought about him every day.

I always wondered what would have happened if he lived. What would he have been like (My Dad said he was a good kid.) Would have he have married? Would I have more cousins?

Sucking-in the Algae Bloom, Lake Okeechobee’s S-308, SLR/IRL

read this. thank you jacque

Lake Okeechobee's S-308 at Port Mayaca, Ed Lippisch, May 13, 2016. Lake Okeechobee’s S-308 at Port Mayaca, Ed Lippisch, May 13, 2016.

The first time I ever laid eyes on Lake Okeechobee, I was eleven years old. I remember thinking that I must be looking at the ocean because I could not see across to the other side. Just enormous!

In spite of its magnificent size, over the past century, Lake Okeechobee has been made smaller–around thirty percent smaller– as its shallow waters have been modified for human use–pushed back, tilled, planted, diked, and controlled. Today, it is managed by the South Florida Water Management District and the Army Corp of Engineers. Sprawling sugar fields, the Everglades Agricultural Area, (EAA), canals, highways, telephone poles, train tracks, processing facilities, a FPL power plant, and small cites surround it.

S-308, (the “S” standing for “structure), opens easterly into the St Lucie Canal, also known as  C-44, (Canal 44).  About twenty miles east is…

Love a Nurse! Nurses week 2015

Happy Nurses Week Everyone!

National Nurses Week History
National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on
May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s Birthday
fn
In the early 1850s, Nightingale returned to London, where she took a nursing job in a Middlesex hospital for ailing governesses. Her performance there so impressed her employer that Nightingale was promoted to superintendant within just a year of being hired. The position proved challenging as Nightingale grappled with a cholera outbreak and unsanitary conditions conducive to the rapid spread of the disease. Nightingale made it her mission to improve hygiene practices, significantly lowering the death rate at the hospital in the process. The hard work took a toll on her health. She had just barely recovered when the biggest challenge of her nursing career presented itself. In October of 1853, the Crimean War broke out. The British Empire was at war against the Russian Empire for control…

The First Earth Day Boston Mass

Happy Earth Day Everybody!

Cyndi Lenz's avatarcyndi lenz

DSC04210

I was looking for some info on the first Earth Day and I came across this really cool footage of students trying to have a peaceful protest at Logan and then all hell broke loose. Innocent people trying to make a point get arrested.

Then I found this years version.  Quite a difference from the old days that’s for sure.

http://www.partyearth.com/boston/holidays/earth-day-7/#description

“In 2009, the United Nations agreed to name April 22nd International Mother Earth Day to recognize the importance of the world’s vital ecosystems. Nearly forty years before in 1970, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day and drew over 20 million participants to its first celebration. Today, more than one billion people in 200-plus countries across the globe celebrate Earth Day annually.

America’s most patriotic city, Boston, joins in on the Earth Day party, becoming one of the nation’s most environmentally conscious cities in April.

Here’s my award winning short film about an amazing group of people who pick up the garbage in exchange for keeping the dogs on the beach.

Featuring the great music of Big Vince and the Phat Cats.

What weighs 20,000 pounds and takes nearly 4,000 people to move it? The Garbage on Jupiter Beach.
15 years ago a local resident Anita Lankler made a deal with the City of Jupiter. You let our dogs on the beach and we’ll pick up the garbage. This little group grew into a membership of 4,000 plus and became the “Friends of Jupiter Beach.”
Once a month hundreds of people, 6 to 86, from fifteen zip codes surrounding Palm Beach County, converge onto Jupiter Beach… to pick up the garbage.
