Body shaming is bullying and harassment and should be enforced on social media

Body shaming is not a medical sickness or a recognized mental disorder; instead, it is a form of bullying, harassment, or social bias centered on a person’s physical appearance, weight, or shape.

Body shaming is reportable on most major social media because it violates community standards against harassment and bullying. We should all be reporting it.

How to Report

  • Locate the specific post, comment, or message containing the body shaming.
  • Tap or click the menu icon (usually three dots or an arrow) next to the content.
  • Select Report and choose categories like Harassment, Bullying, or Hateful Speech when prompted.

Core Reasons Behind Body Shaming

  • Insecurity and Projection: Many individuals struggle with deep-seated self-consciousness about their own appearance. Criticizing someone else temporarily elevates their own fragile self-worth. [1, 2]
  • Social Comparison Theory: People constantly evaluate themselves and others against narrow cultural beauty standards. Shaming others is a way to police social hierarchies and feel like they fit the ideal. [1, 2]
  • Misguided “Helpfulness”: Some people believe that insulting or pointing out weight gain acts as a necessary “wake-up call” to motivate health changes, failing to realize how damaging the remarks are. [1, 2]
  • Learned Behavior: As users on Reddit agree, body shaming is often a deeply ingrained cultural norm passed down by family members, peers, or media that people repeat without thinking. [1, 2]
  • Immaturity and Bullying: A lack of empathy or a desire to humiliate and exert power over others drives baseline cyberbullying and peer pressure. [1, 2, 3]

It seems everywhere I look there is relentless body shaming.

I’ll go first. Someone else’s body is none of your business. Your remarks are just creating an algorithm for more body shaming. So don’t respond. Just report the post.

Many of us love our social media. We keep in touch with our families and friends and can discuss a lot of subjects but there is a deep dark side that is very hurtful to others.

Many big outlets know they will get a lot of views when they do this. Its up to ignore.

Any other suggestions? Its really up to all of us to create a better world.
